What is Habitat for Humanity?
Founded in 1976, Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical
Christian housing ministry that seeks to eliminate poverty housing from
the world by making decent housing a matter of conscience and action.
Habitat for Humanity of Wilson County, an affiliate of Habitat for
Humanity International, has been building homes in partnership with the
local community since 1993.
Community Partnership
Habitat for Humanity of Wilson County builds houses in
partnership with families in need as well as with the community -
churches, businesses, government, civic groups and individuals - who
want to join Habitat's mission to eliminate substandard housing in
Wilson County. We invite you to help us continue to build simple,
decent affordable houses by contributing any way you can.
What Does Habitat Do?
- Works in partnership with families living in substandard
housing conditions who cannot afford market rate rent nor purchase a
home through conventional means.
- Builds houses with volunteer labor.
- Uses donated or discounted materials or materials purchased
with donated funds.
- Finances houses at 0% interest for 25 years.
- Receives no profit and uses mortgage payments to build more
houses.
- Contributes to Habitat-sponsored projects in the Middle
Eastern country of Lebanon. For every house built in Wilson County,
another house is built in the country of Lebanon for approximately
one-tenth the cost of houses built here.
